This is ingenious! Like Orwell's 1984, but specifically for libraries. Because I have worked in a library for close to 20 years now, I can relate to the changes in philosophy, society, the general public, the role of the public library, and all that those changes entail over the years. I particularly loved the nomenclature changes described over time for the users (members/patrons/clients/sojourners/Lecters/Contractuals) and the title/role of the library (Royal, National, Great, Dark). The choice of paper is absolutely divine - I love the feel of the pages. I will purchase a copy for my home library, as there is too much here to capture in a single read at a fixed point in time. The audience is definitely narrower, which probably has not produced the reviews this could have achieved. But any bibliophile, serious reader, or information management fan will love this book.

The holidays can be stressful moments and not always full of fun, loving family. Some families have to make extra efforts during the holidays, not only to get along for the festivities, but to work through deeper issues dividing family members. This story relates the gut-wrenching experience of one such family. Morgan knows how to take a character and develop it from some serious flaws into something with beautiful possibility. If you want a story along the lines of the real spirit of the holidays fraught with a few frazzled tempers and raw emotion, this is one for you.

Just a good story about love and caring for others. It's a great holiday read to put you in the spirit of generosity, goodwill and a romance to boot. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Fannie is flagging here - this turned out to be sadder than I think it was intended to be. The town falling into disuse and abandon, and Bud's failing health do not help. There was a moment of joy in the effort to rebuild the town, but the way it developed was too outrageous to be believable. It read like a dream that didn't quite come true.

Uplifting and not as dire as the Christmas shoes story. Enjoyed a story crafted around the history of a piece of furniture and how it brought people together.

I found this to be profound, sad and troubling. The title and cover design are misleading, for one. There is much that Simpson has to say and express, and the title doesn't do her work justice. I would so much like to better understand and read more of her work. The unique style of sometimes prose, sometimes poetry, and sometimes a combination of the two was truly beautiful.

McCall Smith does not disappoint in this latest installment. The exploration of ethics is well carried out by the character of Isabelle Dalhousie. In this one, she does get herself into a bit of a predicament with child care, and it's humourous to see how she works it through. And her niece Cat - will she ever learn?

This was a new discovery for me, venturing out past the traditional mystery genre. I thoroughly enjoyed - the previous descriptions all ring true for me, including the humour, bit of snark, well-developed characters, breezy style and good combination of fantasy/fiction. I am sorry to see OPL does not have the other hard copies in its catalogue, but that won't stop me pursuing the series.

You can't help but become attached to Eudora, even as grumpy and disagreeable as she is at the outset of the novel. The theme of medical assistance in dying is explored through one individual's very personal experience. Although the outcome is completely different than in Jojo Moye's Me Before You, this novel reiterates that it is always a good idea to verify every aspect and it's never too late to change your mind.

Absolutely intriguing. New and original as storylines go. A man searches his entire life to be reunited with his one true love and goes to amazing lengths to do so. Linking magic with cooking, interweaving emotions and sentiment with culinary achievement to this degree has not been done before. Combining the two themes into a well-crafted story is an extraordinary achievement.

Patrick Taylor does not disappoint in this latest installment. I always enjoy returning to Ballybucklebo to discover the latest. He's a great storyteller and medical historian, completing vast research to correctly document his case examples, and deftly interweaves that with the continuing storyline of his richly developed characters whom we have come to love. Will he cross the brink into the 1970's with his next novel? That is the question!

Rarely do I find a craft book where I want to make all the designs included. This one did it for me. Don't let the cover photo fool you - the designs all include great textures and stitch combinations for a variety of very useful and comfortable afghans and pillows for all rooms in the home.

Decidedly different. Time travel themes are not new - but this one limits the length of time to a cup of hot coffee cooling. Translated from the Japanese, it takes a bit of time to feel comfortable in the structure of the storytelling, but once you are settled in that chair, you will explore these heartwarming journeys - not so much back into time, but deeper within one's own human heart.
