Glaude captures Baldwin’s unflinching criticism of the U.S. and offers his own. In our country, contrary to what we would like to believe about our pursuit of the ideals in our founding documents, white lives have always mattered more than the lives of others, and there is a powerful set of assumptions and policies that maintain that “value gap.”
In order to begin again, Glaude advises, we must be willing to face the entirety of our brutal history, let go of the myths of the U.S. as a shining city on a hill, create policies that repair the damage of centuries of racism, see ourselves and others in all our complexity, ugliness and beauty, and open our hearts to love. We have failed to do this time and again, but Glaude and Baldwin refuse to give up on us.Glaude captures Baldwin’s unflinching criticism of the U.S. and offers his own. Well-written and fascinating. I had no idea eels are so mysterious and interesting. Chapters about eels and other science/natural history topics alternate with chapters about Svensson and his father. Those chapters are sweet and loving. I think people who enjoyed "Lab Girl" and "H is for Hawk" will enjoy this book.Well-written and fascinating. I had no idea eels are so mysterious and interesting. I highly recommend this clear and readable explanation of how we have changed our planet. She mixes heavily-detailed straight talk about climate change with endearing, nostalgic stories, so while it is deadly serious, it goes down easy. Such a sweet and simple fantasy, I enjoyed escaping into the world that Klune created. Great for teens and adults.
There were lots of obvious but important messages about fighting prejudice and hatred. And Klune chose to make homosexuality a nonissue in the world he created. Reminiscent of the choices made by the writers of Schitt's Creek and such a lovely idea.Such a sweet and simple fantasy, I enjoyed escaping into the world that Klune created. Short personal essays about times in the authors' lives when food was a source of joy. These aren't necessarily happy stories but they do illustrate how food can heal, provide comfort, and preserve memories.
The majority are good and some are outstanding! My favorites come from Mira Jacob, Claire Messud, Melissa Febos, Anthony Doerr, Colum McCann, Lev Grossman, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Chantel Acevedo, Edwidge Danticat, Emily Raboteau, Alexander Chee, and Natalie Baszile. An amazing line up of authors!
Best read in small chunks or even one story at a time. Take time to savor the story and relate. Then allow yourself to be inspired and make the recipe or one of your own.Short personal essays about times in the authors' lives when food was a source of joy. Incredibly interesting! Both in the terms of the plot and the lyrical writing style. It is heart wrenching and brutal sometimes and achingly beautiful other times. A different view of how the west was settled. She squeezes in so much, not only an adventure story and a story of the lives of Chinese people in gold country, but also an environmental message, will of which is so necessary for this time.Incredibly interesting! The fourth book in the Lady Sherlock series and my favorite of the four. Complex plot but still engaging in a way that isn't true of a couple books in the series. Great character development and engaging subplots. Sherlock Holmes as a woman and a feminist! You gotta give this series a try. Beautiful book from one of my favorite mediation teachers. I would recommend it for people who are both new to mindfulness and for long time practitioners. I would especially recommend it for practitioners of color because her excellent treatment of the ways racism and capitalism thwart connection.
She covers a lot of ground in a short book and so sometimes I felt a lot of big ideas were not given enough space. I do like her writing style, which is sometimes very touching and sometimes playful.
I appreciated her openness about her experience with breast cancer. Her sharing is a gift.Beautiful book from one of my favorite mediation teachers. An intellectual history of racism coupled with Kendi's personal evolution on the topic. The book is a great way to learn more about racism and stretch your understanding about racism as a power construct. The parts about the main characters' early lives are enjoyable and the writing is excellent. However, I feel the ending is rushed. Also don't read this book if you are looking for a balance of male and female characters.
