Comment:

Truly spends the first half of this book at Mermaid Academy, and the second half trying to search for lost pirate treasure while being grounded. I was a bit disappointed, especially after I enjoyed Yours Truly so much. It is almost 400 pages long, and it just seems like this could have been three smaller stories instead. I also think that the kind of reader who enjoyed the mystery of the first two books wouldn't really like the whole mermaid camp thing. Like me. But it's just my opinion. I did enjoy the character development and seeing the relationships between the characters progress... (Hint: there are a couple of proposals!) 7/10

What a beautifully written story that did not disappoint after I read all its rave reviews! I love reading children's books, and if you enjoy simple stories with subtle deeper themes, I'm sure you will love this one. At first, I was sad about the way it ended, but I also know I wouldn't have been satisfied with any other ending. I'm very interested to see what the Disney movie adaptation does to this story. This was a very special book that I would read again anytime, even if it's just to escape into a lazy, hot, first-week-of-August day in the middle of winter. 10/10 stars!

Here's a word to describe this book: Perturbing. Now perhaps you like being unsettled in this way, which I guess is why there are whole genres of these kinds of books. Maybe for what it is, Annihilation is a good book. But this is my first (and most likely last) time reading this genre, so take my comments with a grain of salt. Let's start with what I did enjoy: the experience of a new and puzzling genre and the premise of exploring an unknown world with mystifying secrets. I just got bored on the journey! There was little action compared to the pages and pages of the narrator describing her childhood, her relationship with her husband, her scientific studies. Yawn. And the concept was so unreal that it didn't keep me engaged and definitely has not interested me in the rest of the trilogy. I also didn't like the way it reads like a dream. And not in the romantic sense of the word—I mean an actual dream: weird, vague, all-over-the-place; a hazy nightmare. I feel like there are deeper themes, but too vague or ambiguous for me to really understand which only made me feel stupid. But these are only my feelings about the book, and I see many others have really enjoyed it.

Comment:

This movie is well done; better, I think, than the 2019 movie. However, these two hours are only just enough to whet your appetite for the books! If you haven't yet, please read the book! It goes into so much more detail and contains many more stories. You'll understand and appreciate the story even more :) But all that said, this movie was excellent and I love the actors here.
