(Notes on this book: Thirteen year-old Trenton Coleman lives in Cove, a city contained within a mountain. In his insular world, the citizens are confined, they are told, for their protection. Each person plays a part, but for the whole to function as it should, one must never question, change, or attempt to improve the status quo. Trenton Coleman, the story's middle school-age protagonist, finds his chances of becoming one of the city's mechanics jeopardized after breaking the strictest law: that no "inventions " shall be made by anyone. Trenton searches for the reason the Cove has banned all invention . As his quest deepens, he unearths more than he bargains for. The characters well-drawn and likeable, and they'll discover the value of friendship, creativity, and freedom of thought.)

(Notes on this book: Centuries ago, the Fog, a dangerous, thick white cloud, descended onto earth, bringing with it a plague that killed or sickened most of its inhabitants. Chess has been working on a salvage airship to keep from starving. Chess's deepest secret is that he was born in the Fog. As it turns out, his "secret" is no accident. He was made this way by lord Kodoc, who wanted someone he could use to find the machines that control the fog. This is an entertaining story, filled with good-natured humor (lots of little pop culture references that will make you chuckle), amusing dialogues, fast-moving action and unexpected twists.)
