Historical fiction based on a true story about 16-year-old Eliza Lucas who is left in charge of her family's plantations in 1739 South Carolina. Her efforts to save her family's livelihood through cultivating indigo, despite the restrictions places on women, makes for an interesting story. The author mainly writes romance and that is obvious here in the emphasis on Eliza's romantic interests, which at times does sidetrack from the deeper issues at play (slavery, gender roles, war). The author's approach to the slave/owner relationship could have been more nuanced, but overall, a good read.
