Artemis Fowl by Eion Colfer is a mythical science fiction novel that follows Artemis Fowl, a twelve-year-old genius and criminal mastermind, who is determined to steal riches from none other than the fairy race. On the other side of the coin, the story follows Captain Holly Short, an elf from the Special Forces who would be forced to try to outwit the young genius and stop him before he can execute his plan. Artemis’s ability to unveil this hidden civilization filled with various creatures that are described in folklore and myths will impress any reader, especially once they remember he’s only twelve. Hearing about the back and forth between Artemis and the fairies keeps the reader intrigued and curious about each sides’ next move. Throughout the story both main characters’ motives are highlighted as they’re forced to fight through internal conflict, adding complexity to their characters. Recently the book was adapted into a movie by Disney and is only the first in a series of nine books. This story is a personal favorite of mine that I read when I was in elementary school, so the reading level may be a bit low for young adult readers. Overall, Artemis Fowl is a science fiction novel worth reading, as it will amaze and entertain any reader through battles of wit between a mythical species and a twelve-year-old genius.
