The final film of the great Belgian filmmaker, called "arguably the most important European filmmaker of her generation" by J. Hoberman. This is not the film to start with if you haven't seen anything by her; that would be here groundbreaking 1975 film "Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels." Despite the title, this is basically a home movie of Akerman and her mother, a holocaust survivor. It's certainly personal and intimate but also slow and requires some patience from the viewer. Weirdly, it reminded me of a number of Iranian films such as "This is Not a Film" and "Ten."
Sadly Akerman killed herself in 2015.

Beautiful & tragic, but so familiar, feels like home, humanist in its approach, intimate.
