Christine Jorgensen sex reassignment was among the first of its kind. The former Army Private from the Bronx had gone to Copenhagen, Denmark in 1950 as a tourist. When he returned to his home in the United States he was no longer George. Instead with extended hormone therapy treatments and the collaboration of a number of Danish surgeons, the former GI became Christine Jorgensen. Christine invited the inquiries of the American Medical Association upon her return to the Bronx in December 1952.
