Eivin settles with his family in England on land recently vacated by the Romans ((450 AD). Life takes him up and down the ancient pathway known as 'The Icknield Way'. He falls in love but is imprisoned before he can claim his lady. His brother, Ans, is the devil's novice and he hates him. Eivin is taken prisoner by the Celts and is forced to work as a farmer and later a bronzesmith. When there is no ore to work, he is sent off to mine. On his return his gift to his overlord is mistaken for stolen goods and he is again imprisoned. After an adventure on far-off Isle Royale, he returns to seek revenge on his brother Ans. When he returns to his original home next the North Sea, a series of surprises await him.--Provided by publisher
