War veteran Peter Ash sought peace and quiet among the towering redwoods in Northern California, but the trip isn't quite the balm he hoped for. The dense forest and close fog cause his claustrophobia to buzz and spark, and then he stumbles upon a hungry grizzly bear. Peter doesn't favor his odds in a fight of man against bear, so he makes a strategic retreat up a nearly sapling. There, he finds something strange: a climbing rope, affixed to a distant branch above. It leads to another, and another, up through the giant tree canopy, ending at a hanging platform. On the platform is a woman on the run. From below them come the sounds of men and gunshots

I'm an avid suspense novel reader, and I am always looking to find new authors. Nick Petrie was recommended recently on reputable book list, so I gave him a try. Petrie's main character, Peter Ash, is a younger version of Lee Child's Jack Reacher. Peter Ash, a military hero, is tall, strong, and skilled, but he is not brash or intimidating. He's a more modern hero, with personal demons that keep him from leading a normal life. As he roams the US with a backpack and a tent, he find plenty of challenges and people who need his help.

I think Peter Ash is a wonderful character. I liked the first book better though. The first half of this story is great but then the core of the plot weighs it down in the second. It was worth the read, but I'm looking forward to the next book with a higher expectation.

I picked this up in an airport (thinking I was going to need an extra read due to delay) and then set it aside for quite awhile - what was I thinking? This is an awesome book. Nick Petrie's BURNING BRIGHT is a great story with a super plot and really, really, really interesting characters. I didn't read his first book introducing Peter Ash, and won't now (because I got the gist of it from BURNING BRIGHT). But, I am really looking forward to his next book, LIGHT IT UP, when it comes out. If you want a new author and a great thriller to read, I highly recommend Nick Petrie's books.

2nd book in what promises to be a terrific new series. I really enjoyed Burning Bright, great thriller. Just wish I'd started with book one, The Drifter :)
