"A newbie to the track team, Patina "Patty" Jones must learn to rely on her family and teammates as she tries to outrun her personal demons"--Provided by publisher
Summary:
Can you imagine losing your father, your mother handling diabetes, joining a new school, taking care of your little sister, and competing in a track team all at the same time? Can you imagine if this was your “day-to-day” life? Well, it sure is for Patina Jones, in the book Patina by Jason Reynolds. Patina “Patty” Jones has gone through a lot; her mother, Ma, had gotten diabetic and had her legs amputated shortly after her father passed away. Now she and her sister, Maddy, live with their aunt, Momly, and their Uncle Tony. Due to all the complicated things happening in her life, Patina runs track on the Defenders track team, to cope with all the stress. She feels the pressure to be perfect and run for her little sister Maddy, for Ma, who’s not capable of running ever since she lost her legs, and for her supportive track team, the Defenders, to make them proud. A lot of new changes have been brought to Patina; she is now being sent to this fancy private school called Chester Academy, and has been asked by Coach to run a relay! Relay, where you have to depend on and trust others to pass the baton, something Patina struggles to do. Over the course of the book, Patina has met new people, been through new challenges, and has shown her determination, how she is caring, and her trait for acceptance.

I loved this book! I liked how the author clearly depicted the main character, Patina, through her feelings/thoughts, as well as her actions! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series; “Sunny” by Jason Reynolds.
this book reminding me of the fun of running like your life depends on it. All the pressure put upon her to stay strong, all the people that depend on her to keep it together. It's an inspiring book that i really enjoyed.
I had heard so many great things about "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds and I had never realized that it was part of a series. And with that cliffhanger - I just had to get my hands on the book as soon as possible.
I own this book.
I thought that Ghost was amazing... this book takes it to a whole new level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Patina is soooo great!
i was in awe when i read this.... u have toooo read ittttttttttttt
Another great, heartfelt book from one of the most influential writers of our time. This is part of his "Track" series, and they're all excellent. It's not just about running, it's also about family, and perseverance, and friendship.
I really loved Ghost. I thought it was the best book Reynolds had written. Then I read Patina, and it's even better. Great characters, great plot, great way to incorporate poetry into the story. I wonder if Sunny will be even better?

Middle school/teen book
A terrific middle grade read about a young runner balancing her fierce competitive spirit with her family care giving obligations.
